Course Overview

This course responds to the VCE Media study design area of study 2, narratives in production and is loosely built around the idea of an Augmented Reality Game, in that it is based in the real world and uses convergent media together to tell a story.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to apply the media production process to create, develop and construct narratives.

To achieve this outcome the student will draw on key knowledge and key skills outlined in Area of Study 2. (“VCAA Media Study Design”, 2017 p17)

It aims to provide students with:

Key Knowledge

  1. media production processes and their relationship to specific media forms
  2. construction of narratives using the media production process
  3. the roles and responsibilities required in different stages of the media production process
  4. technical skills used in the operation of media technologies
  5. ethical, legal and community constraints in the production and distribution of media products
  6. media language appropriate to the design, production and evaluation of media products.

Key Skills

  1. design and produce narratives using the stages of the media production process
  2. undertake roles and responsibilities within the media production process
  3. apply technical skills in the operation of media technologies
  4. develop and produce narratives within ethical, legal and community constraints
  5. use media language appropriate to the design, construction, production and evaluation of media productions. (“VCAA Media Study Design” 2017, p17-18)

For this unit we will use Adobe Creative Cloud and particularly Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Audition for sound, as well as Google slides and a digital pin up board such as Miro Board. The pedagogy is active learning in a design thinking process and context will be provided throughout the course.

This course is aimed at VCE, year 11, unit 2. The teacher will need to identify where the students are and how fast they can move through the course. The teacher will also need to demonstrate and understand the program of each tutorial so they can support the students in the classroom.

What will we create?

We will work in groups of 3-4 to first create a narrative using the plot points from Dan Harmon’s Story Circle. We will then divide these plot points amongst the group members who will then tell use any form of media to describe the plot point. This project will include the use of codes and conventions to clearly link the scenarios.

What will each lesson involve?

A class teacher is needed for each lesson to assist students to follow each week. This website can be used as a resource so that students can check their progress, and even do so at home. Each class will include some direct instruction from the teacher, as well as the videos and instructions embedded into each lesson on this website.

Lesson 1Brief look at assignment, narrative refresher, Building your own narrative – plot points, brainstorming
Lesson 2More details about assignment, dividing the plot points and codes and conventions
Lesson 3Start working on first plot point
Lesson 4Interim project presentation, second plot point development
Lesson 5Refine, review and modify plot points
Lesson 6Finish assignment and submit

Assessment overview

Assignment 1 – 20%

Formative assessment is included via a mid point submission, this is worth 20% of the final mark, as well as ongoing weekly feedback.

A summative assessment should also be handed in by each student group at the end and all work will be reviewed and summative feedback provided.

Students at VCE level should be completing minimum 2 media products and documentation of the process in the google slides ARG template provided.

Assignment 2 – 80%

The final submission should include the google slides document, this should include evidence of completing each stage of the project and should build through each assignment. The final videos should be uploaded to YouTube, and any other visuals such as photos should be included in the slide presentation.

This course should take about 6 weeks depending on the skill level of students, it is possible it could be spread out over a longer time, it is a very enjoyable project so this is completely possible. With this website, work can be completed for homework as well, and the bulk of the project development should be done in the classroom with a teacher. Here is a guide for assessment for the achievement of the assignment.

Has completed the plot point, but has not described the process used or the reason for the medium chosen.Has described some elements of the media production process followed and has given a basic reason about why they chose that medium. Final product is nicely produced.Has described the media production process and this has informed the media form the student has chosen. Has clearly described steps taken to achieve final product. Final product is very well produced.
Overall construction of narrative of story and connection between the plot points including the use of codes and conventions

The overall narrative is not as clear as it could be, and the plot points need more work. There are some codes and conventions but this is limited and the narrative is not clear at all.The narrative is somewhat clear and most plot points differentiate between each other. There is some use of codes and conventions and somewhat of a clear narrative. The overall narrative is clear and each plot point differentiates from the others. There is a clear link of codes and conventions between the plot points which enables a clear narrative for the project.
Team work and providing feedback to each other at different stages of the media process, awareness of production process and supporting each other with writing, storyboarding shooting or development, editing and finalising any media products.

Students worked as a team but were a little inconsistent and didn’t include any insight into feedback received in the process of creating their projects.Students worked as a team and were able to identify several areas to improve on and provided regular feedback to each other that is clearly documented in the final assignment.Students worked very well as a team and were able to support each other well in the development of their individual projects.

Were able to include details about feedback they had received from the group and how this had helped them with the development of their work.
